What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 25,994.
Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes.
Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – I didn’t notice many, but as you will see, I had trouble concentrating on the story.
Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – A fast read if you can stay with the story.
Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – The writer is an American, but, I could have sworn he is a Brit. By that I mean that some terms common for readers of the UK will find terms, such as stick for cigarette, not so unusual. If he did this intentionally, I commend him.
There also is a moderate degree of foul language, including the f-bomb.
Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A – My biggest disappointment might have been the constant reference to the aunt lighting or puffing or stubbing out a cigarette was, for me, sufficiently annoying that I two or three times closed the Kindle App. Still, I did keep opening the app to continue reading, so, perhaps, the problem is me and my successful termination of cigarette smoking nearly 12 years ago.
But, perhaps even more disappointing was the double spacing between lines that resulted in this book being far less than page count suggests. Probably this is about 120 pages.
But, the story itself is not very entertaining. It just didn’t grab me. Yet, not even that was my biggest disappointment. Since I abhor spoilers I am only going to say that, yes, Hollywood and Bollywood have conditioned us to accept the suspenseful heroics at the last possible second, where a guy holding a cocked gun gets shot and the victim is unhurt. Word to the wise: a person with a finger on the trigger who gets shot reflexively with fire the gun. Therefore, the victim will be shot.
Another three tips for writers along the same line: shooting a lock will NEVER open the lock; Shooting the wheels of a motor vehicle will not flatten he tires; Tracing a call by the phone company is done in seconds, if not instantly. Villains who count the minutes passing so they can hang up before the magic three minutes have elapsed will almost always be stunned when law enforcement surrounds them.
A – Having bluntly stated what I found disappointing, it is only fair to report what I did like. This writer made a good attempt to let us glimpse into the daily routing of the various characters. This is a feat often overlooked by authors. And the dialogue is reasonably effective, consistent with the characters.
Q - I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.
EXCERPT
“Who are you anyway, miss?” Lu stepped forward, eyes wide with wonder.
She looked toward the line-up teeth gritted in sudden anxiety.
“Good luck to you both.” She took off running in the opposite direction. Zig-zagging in the smoke and dust, she vanished before their eyes.
“You let her get away!” A Chinese officer came puffing up behind them, bowing over his knees and dropping his rifle.
“Yeah, uh, not exactly she just sort of got away. Why? Who was she?” Amarillo felt his stomach constricting.
“She is Raphael. That one woman terrorist considered the most dangerous human weapon on the Planet at this present time.” The officer looked exhausted like he would catch hell for her escape later.
Amarillo found it impossible to believe. Raphael was a horror story in the evening news. That woman had been a guardian angel.
Garcia, Richard J. (2016-01-15). Mystery: Thriller Mystery: Thriller Story One (Thriller Suspense Crime Murder psychology Fiction) (Kindle Locations 1547-1555). Double T Create. Kindle Edition.
Bottom Line:
Although I did not find this story entertaining, the writer does have a certain skill that shows promise enough that I will probably try one of his stories again in the future.
Therefore, I am rating this at three stars out of three.
